Claud Team Opens Seafood Spot Penny in East Village

Penny is a new walk-in seafood spot from Chase Sinzer and Joshua Pinsky’, owners of Claud, in the East Village.
The raw bar and seafood counter consists entirely of bar seating, the majority of which are held open nightly. A dining rail that lines Penny’s facade overlooks the bustle of 10th Street below, inviting guests to post up with a platter or enjoy a snack while they wait for the next open seats.
Shellfish and crustaceans are plucked directly from a series of wall-mounted stainless steel bins; some compartments filled with the day’s catch and others with bottles of wine ready to be poured. The honed, white marble bar with distinctive ocean-gray veining runs the length of the space before breaking off into an L-shaped counter prime for taking in the lively scene.
The menu offers seafood-centric items: oysters and clams in varying sizes and preparations, classics such as shrimp cocktail or tuna carpaccio and bountiful platters on ice that showcase the breadth of the raw bar. A market section changes daily with seasonal finds such as Maine lobster, served warm with brown butter, and a Beggar’s Purse with caviar. Guests can pop by for a progression of snacks or assemble a full meal with a cooked main such as cod + clams or a riff on an oyster pan roast before lingering over dessert or a bottle of wine.
Penny’s wine program, a collaboration between wine director Ellis Srubas-Giammanco (most recently of Chambers) and Sinzer, champions the next generation of vignerons, showcasing progressive voices on the same pages as winemaking legends. Apart from the eclectic 250-bottle list, beverage possibilities include by-the-glass selections that start at $12, considered sake and sherry offerings and Suntory The Premium Malt's on draft.
While the spot caters to the spontaneous, Penny offers a handful of reservations released a week in advance via Resy.
