Cititour.com Review
Usually played more for its comic elements than its serious side, "All’s Well That Ends Well," has often confounded Shakespearean scholars. The mixture of bawdy humor, soldiers’ dilemmas, and bittersweet romance, is not an easy vehicle to guide. But this latest version, for Shakespeare in the Park, directed by Daniel Sullivan with the elegance of a fine symphony conductor, is a tender and moving love story with an equal balance of comic human foibles.

No stranger to Shakespeare’s intricacies, Sullivan, (responsible for the brilliant "Merchant of Venice" which transferred to Broadway last season) concentrates on the more serious elements here giving this "All’s Well That Ends Well" a present-day feel.

The cast is top-notch. Tonya Pinkins as the Countess Rousillion, is tender and kind-hearted. Stage veteran, John Cullum, is perfectly cast as the King, vacillating between exasperation and understanding. Kristen Connolly, as a would-be lover is as adept at seduction as innocence. Reg Rogers, as the bumbling Parolles, fine-tunes his comedic elements. The romantic leads, Annie Parisse ("Law & Order") and André Holland, match wits in the classic tone of a struggling marriage and yet this one has barely begun.

The simple, yet functional, set of a single raised platform, patterned with turn-of-the-century railings, from Scott Pask, perfectly compliments Jane Greenwood’s matching costumes. The production includes terrific music composed by Tom Kitt.

The show is running in repertory with "Measure For Measure." It’s always a delight to see Shakespeare outdoors. This "All’s Well That Ends Well" is a shining example of how captivating the play can be when it really works!
