Cititour.com Review
Like a horror movie where blood and gore abound, such is the thunderclap of Macbeth, a British transport which has made its way across the Atlantic, first alighting at BAM and now in a limited Broadway run at the Lyceum.

Patrick Stewart ensnares the title role with spine-tingling glee. The actor (perhaps best known for his stint on Star Trek: The Next Generation) attacks Macbeth with relish and captures the new king's decent into madness with precision. Shakespeare's power-hungry general is painted with new strokes of charming cunning, undeniable lust, and a despot's repulsive depravity.

Kate Fleetwood as Lady Macbeth, more often than not bathed in blood, has the stance of a cat clawing her way out of a cage. The entire ensemble seems hell-bent on matching the scope of their surroundings, often making for more bombast than sense.

The production is certainly innovative and daring. Director Rupert Goold sets the tragedy in a totalitarian world with elements of Stalin and Hitler permeating the proceedings. He adds an occult far beyond what the playwright envisioned for his three witches and the assorted visions that his characters endure. Aided by designer Anthony Ward’s dank set and Howard Harrison’s stark lighting, Goold blasts the stage with projected images, dripping blood, and an ensemble of assorted characters right out of Night of the Living Dead. The resulting production, where Patrick Stewart has clearly
mastered the character of Macbeth, is also an assault on the audience. Enter at your own risk.
