Neighborhood: East Village
Type of Place: Jewelry

Description:
The East Village has no shortage of jewelry stores, but VERAMEAT is something else. The brainchild of former model Vera Balyura, VERAMEAT offers a lovely mix of sculpture and jewelry, featuring bold and quirky metallic designs. The intricate details are worth the price tags, ranging from $20 to $300. It’s a great place to shop for yourself or for friends, especially during the holidays.

A dinosaur eating fried chicken ring? Check. A two-headed T-Rex charm? Check. Two swans kissing? Check. How about a Hatchet Loving Centaur Pirate? She has that, too. Customers love her hand necklaces and two-fingered rings. There are adorable dachshund and bulldog designs for the pet lovers, as well as astronaut and brain ones for geeks. Not surprisingly, VERAMEAT already has quite a following. The show counts celebrities such as Amy Sedaris, Michel Gondry, and Tilda Swinton among its fans.

If you chance upon Vera in the store, you’ll likely meet her adorable dog (and store mascot), Fred Meat, who loves unicorn-pegasus necklaces and mermaid rings as much as I do. Be warned; you’ll likely spend a lot of time here.

Finally, a jewelry store with imagination.   - Cat Young
