Cititour Review:

A local favorite for long-time Carnegie Hill residents, Island has been serving up classic American cuisine at its cozy – bordering on cramped – Madison Avenue locale for more than 20 years. Upper East Siders and museum-goers alike come to find a table at this delicious, albeit pricey, staple of the neighborhood.

Start with duck sausage (9.75), an unusual menu item served in the winter with a sweet onion jam. In the summer, try the Maine lobster quesadilla (12.75). Seasonal salads, including one with winter lettuce, pear and truffle vinaigrette (14.25) or another with summer tomatoes and buffalo mozzarella (12.75) are sometimes on offer. Mains include a variety of pasta dishes, but the star is the roast free-range chicken (19.75) with perfectly crisp skin, although the fish entrées, like roast salmon (26.25) are nothing to scoff at.

A brunch menu at Island offers a variety of weekend morning staples, like buttermilk pancakes (9.75), challah French toast (10.50) and eggs Benedict (14.25), though the star is truly the nighttime experience.

The prices at this Upper East Side favorite – like those at other neighborhood joints of the same caliber – may be more than some are willing to pay, but residents of the neighborhood who patronize the cozy spot where, eventually, everybody knows your name, don't complain – the generously-portioned food and the homey ambiance make up for it.
