Not too far from the hustle and bustle of 42nd Street you will find an urban sanctuary called Qi. The Thai princess outside might be the first thing to catch your eye, but step inside for a true taste of paradise. Clear glass bubbles dangle from the ceiling providing a dance for the eyes. Cherry blossoms offer a shot of color against a stark white bar with its clear lucite stools. In the center of the restaurant, a giant Buddha stands guard inside a silvery sanctuary surrounded by white banquettes, silver beads and Thai dancers. Indeed, Qi is a site to behold. A restaurant that is beautifully executed. A spot you might expect to find in a trendy part of Tribeca or maybe the Meatpacking District, not Times Square. The menu offers traditional Thai fare inspired by the philosophies of Taoist and Ayurveda cuisine. Foods designed to bring you good karma. Dishes that are generally served at happy occasions like weddings, births and family gatherings. A glance at the menu reveals tempting appetizers like charcoal grilled tiger prawns in a spicy chili lime garlic sauce ($9) and Chiang Mai pork sausage with chili relish and crispy pork skin ($4.50). Main plates include Panang Duck Curry ($24), fiery pork with dried bird's eye chili, and a pork rib served with green jackfruit in a lightly spicy broth ($18). Desserts by chef Pichet Ong include tamarind pudding with blueberry and salty cream chili, a peanut brownie parfait, and flourless chocolate cake with green tea and raspberry. Qi is truly worth seeking out if only for the good karma it brings. - Thomas Rafael
