Cititour Review:

Yorkville once filled with German restaurants and shops.  But over the years most have disappeared.  Heidelberg still remains on Second Avenue near 86th Street along with Schaller and Weber.  So, it's nice to see that the at least one of them is expanding.

Schaller and Weber has converted a portion of its butcher shop into a sausage bar called Schaller's Stube offerings housemade sausages and links that set it apart from your ordinary hot dog stand.  Here you can chow down on nine different types of sausages, including bratwurst, knackwurst, smoked sausages and even a bacon cheddar brat.

I tried the Schaller Double, a monster bacon-cheddar brat set atop a toasted Balthazar bun with melted American cheese, crispy bacon, frisee, tomato, onions and crunchy pickles with Stube sauce, which kind of reminded me of Russian dressing.   It's an amazing sandwich priced at ten bucks.  A "classic" wiener is also being offered along with Steuben's Reuben, a beef wiener with swiss cheese and sauerkraut for $8.  Or, better yet, create your own.  Sauces and sides include things like bacon jam, curry ketchup and sriracha aioli.  Fried chicken is also offered.

Schaller's Stube is open from 11am-11pm Monday through Saturday and on Sundays from 11am to 5pm. Life is good.
